Saturday 3rd Nov

Today a group of students set to work on poetry writing which, with one group turned into song writing and singing. All good for boosting confidence in using English. Here are some of their pieces of work.

Friday morning.

Last Friday the Jetwing Lighthouse hotel held their weekly beach clean session. Getting up at 5.30am, Charlene travelled the short distance to Galle to join in this event. This was followed by a breakfast at the hotel and then greeting more students back at the centre.

Back to the centre.

This week Charlene has been spending time on developing art skills by using trees and seasons to encourage the students to discuss, plan and share works of art depicting leaves and trees at different times of the year.

Away trip

After one particular session Ruwan, Charlene and several students visited the Buddhist pagoda on the farside of Galle harbour. Below this magnificent building is the wonderful Jungle Beach.

Games

A favourite Sri Lankan game is Pin the Eye on the Elephant. A good way of getting students to relax into their learning.

Charlene working with students.

Having settled into the MindGarden Centre, Charlene, our volunteer, started working with eager and enthusiastic students. Through reading and writing, the Philosophy is to make them more confident in using their English as well as improving their grammar and pronunciation. This was at the end of last week and results were excellent. The students responded very positively to Charlene's methods, using art as an extra stimulus.
